After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine is being tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit.

A. tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

B. tested that could eventually have the capability of propelling aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or to help

C. tested, eventually able to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours, or helping

D. tested, and it eventually could propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or helping

E. tested, and it could eventually have the capability to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

I would go with A on this one, because it's the most concise grammatically correct answer. B, C, and D all have parallelism issues that eliminate them, and I think E is wordier than it needs to be. However, it's a really tough call between A and E, and if you Google this question, you'll find that many other students have addressed it, with differing statements as to the OA. What's the source of this question, and what OA do you have for it?

C=> Propel or helping -NOT Parallel.
B=> Wordy and not parallel.
D=> Propel or helping -Not parallel.
E=> Wordy.

Answer is A.

Sometimes, I have seen in few sc, that is used after verb to protect the clarity of the sentence.

Just imagine the sentence in the following way:

After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit is being tested.

Does it make sense?

I would go with A on this one, because it's the most concise grammatically correct answer. B, C, and D all have parallelism issues that eliminate them, and I think E is wordier than it needs to be. However, it's a really tough call between A and E, and if you Google this question, you'll find that many other students have addressed it, with differing statements as to the OA. What's the source of this question, and what OA do you have for it?
this question is taken from gmat sets and the OA is E

but the source is not reliable. that why I have posted here.
May be in Option A , Is eventually modifying propel correctly ?

Is the use of 'have' correct in E - does it match with singular 'it' - cud u throw some light on that

A is not correct. A means THE ENGINE THAT CAN.PORPEL.. IS TESTED. This meaning is not logic

E is best.

i would go with E because , that part use subject it and i think sentence require this.

Isn't the jet engine the object being tested? What's wrong with 'A' meaning that the engine is being tested?

Hi Andrea,

Is the use of 'have' correct in E - does it match with singular 'it' - cud u throw some light on that
"Have" is fine with "it" in this instance because it's used conditionally, with the word "could." You would not say "It have potential," for example, but you would say, "It could have potential." Try it with other pronouns and it still works: "she has" is correct, but for the conditional, you would say, "she could have."
