There are a variety of ways to prepare for the GMAT. Using a class centered course is one of them, there are guided self study courses and using a one on one coach or tutor is another option.
Your best bet may be to start by doing some preparation on your own and then taking a practice test to see where you stand. After doing that you will be in a better position to evaluate your options.
Also, there are some math, and to a lesser degree verbal, basics that you should have down before going into a live course should you go with that option. Otherwise you may not get the full benefit of the class. Many people already have the math skills, as the math used on the GMAT is pretty basic, but if you have been out of school for a while and haven't been using much math, you might benefit from some review.
One way to get started would be to download the free GMAT Prep software from mba.com, the official site of the GMAT. That software contains a quick review of the math used by the test, some practice questions and two practice tests.
Once you have gotten a sense of the structure of the test and have done a bunch of practice questions, take the first test in the software and see how you do.
