I thought answer was C

Can someone explain?

Would be better if not posting the OA. Narrowed down to D and E. "The first sighted" and "While" in E are not quite strong enough to be correct answer...

the use of while in E is not correct.

D is correct

C is wrong because this option makes the sentence sound like the discovery, not the star, was observed by Jocelyn. It's a modifier issue.

I think that tne issue with C is about the use of the past perfect. The past perfect refers to an event that is anterior to a past event. In the sentence, there is no post event to the discovery that is mentionned and that justifies the use of past perfect
