IMO A. Let me give my shot.

B "that is more than.." is a modifier which cant be removed. However in this case it is used as optional modifier.

C - it holds . awkward framing of sentance.

D- While is used describe a instance of time. Eg :- while i am walking

E :- what is it that "More than all the north indian lakes combined" modifying ? is it lake baikal ?

what is OA?

This is a question about modifiers

Modifiers must be placed closed to the things they modify

More than all ...................... and More than 20 percent ........... must be placed as close as possible

More than all .............. adds / gives or explains the 20% of the worlds .......

Which hold 20% gives information about the lake

SO the best choice is A

One small query....Although "A" looks best...

but to complete the comparsion....don't we need...

more than "that of" all lakes combined...

Can someone please tell why omission of "that of" correct here.

Even I think 'that of' should have been present. However I came to conclusion based on elimination. So even I have the same doubt. Need some experts to comment on it .

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.
I think it's A too, but I don't understand why you think it's missing 'that of'. What do you think about the following view of the sentence:

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal
[ is the main clause ]

, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water
[is a relative clause describing "Siberia's Lake Baikal"]

(which is) more than all the North American Great Lakes (hold) combined.
[is another clause, describing "20 percent of the world's fresh water"]

Hi Brian,

The doubt comes because you are assuming "hold" to be there....in the last sentence...

If we do not assume "hold" to be there then comparison becomes like

"Amount more than.....lakes....".

I suppose this is the case of eliptical clause....that confuses me and many others a lot...

Can you please tell when we can assume these type of implicit info to be there and when not....

There are some examples in OG-10 and 11, where it clearly says that "that of/those of" is needed to complete the comparison.
