The average mpg would be the total miles driven divided by the total gallons of fuels consumed.

Total miles = 10 + 50 = 60

Total fuel consumption = 10/25 + 50/40 gallons
= 33/20 gallons.

Average mpg = 60/(33/20) = 36.36 = 36 approx.

How did you get 30? Maybe you did a procedural mistake.

on city no of gallons used = 10/25 = 2/5

on highway no of gallons used = 50/40 = 5/4

Total avg = total distance/total gallons

=60(/(2/5) +(5/4))
= approx. 36
