Guys My answer is coming to be C
My (A) we have an equation
0.36M +0.5W = 0.42*1400

where M=No. Of Men
W= No of Women



(B) we get the value of M=288 from here

So using both the equations,we get the value of W

So answer is C
Please tell me where am I wrong

where M=No. Of Men
W= No of Women
This is perfect so far.
But, from the orginal question, we can create a second equation.
Since there are 1400 people altogehter, we know that M+W=1400

Now we have two equations and two unknowns, which we can solve for M and W.

the answer is A.
by second statement we cannot find the number of women surveyed.

The answer can be calculated using only A.

From the question we know that 42% of 1400 = 588 people (some men, some women consider research as their goal )
Therefore 58% (100% - 42%) of 1400 = 812 must consider research as not an essential goal.

From condition 1 we know that: 36% of men and 50% of women consider research an essential goal therefore 64% of men and the other 50% of women must consider reasearch as not an essential goal. From this you can form 2 equations and solve them for M and W.

0.36M + 0.5W = 588
0.64M + 0.5W = 812

(But you have to assume that of the 1400 people that participated in the research, no other GMAT besides male and female were present and everyone replied either yes or no to the question - no maybes :) )

Simpler solution with the formula for mixtures

(%Men - Overall%)/(Overall% - %Women) = no. of women(W)/no. of men(M)

W/M = 3/4

so W=600,M=800
