These are 2 questions i couldnt seem to figure out. please help if u can! thanks :)

#1) If (1/5)^m (1/4)^18= 1/2(10)^35, what is m?

("^" means to the power of) so its 1/5 to the power of m, multiplied by 1/4 to the 18th, which equals 1/2(10) to the 35th.

The answer is 35. Just wasnt sure how they came to that conclusion??

#2) A retailer sold an appliance for $80. If the net gross profit was 25 percent of the retailers cost for the appliance, how many dollars was the retailers gross profit?

The answer is 16. I though i could simply mulitply $80 by .25 and have my answer, but that is incorrect.

PLEASE HELP!!!! thank you again!!

(1/5)^m (1/4)^18= 1/2(10)^35

(1/5)^m (1/2^2)^18=1/2(2*5)^35

(1/5)^m (1/2)^36=1/2(2^35*5^35)

(1/5^m) *(1/2^36)=1/2^36*.1/5^35

Comparing exponents on both sides,we get m=35

SP=80

Profit=25/100*CP

Profit=SP-CP

25/100*CP=80-CP

CP[1+1/4]=80

CP[5/4]=80

CP=64

Profit=SP-CP=80-64=16

Hope this clarify.

Cost price is (100/125)*80 = 64.

So profit in dollars is 80 - 64 = 16 or 25% of 64 = 16.

Note that profit in dollars is (%profit * cost price). What you have taken wrongly is (%profit*selling price).

Solution:

We can let x = the retailer's cost for the appliance and create the equation:

x + 0.25x = 80

1.25x = 80

x = 80/1.25 = 64

The cost of the appliance was $64. Therefore, the profit is 0.25(64) = $16.
