What fraction of this year's graduating students at a certain college are males?

1) Of this year's graduating students, 33% of the males and 20% of the females transferred from another college.

2) Of this year's graduating students, 25% transferred from another college.

It should be C.

Let x be the no of males in the college
Let y be the no of females in the college

To find x/x+y


1) From statement 1 we know

.33x and .20y out of x and y transferred from another college. We cant find x+y or x/x+y

Insufficient

2) .25(x+y) transferred from other college. We cant find x/x+y with just this Insufficient

From 1) and 2)
we know
.33x+.20y = .25(x+y)

From this we can find the ratio x/x+y

Thanks that helps. the wording of the options got me confused "transferred from another college" .. what is that supposed to mean in the context of the problem ?

A college is made up of two types of students: Those who transferred from another college, and those who came to the school directly from high school.

Let x and y be the numbers of the male and female students.

Combined 1 and 2, 35% X + 20% Y = 25% (X + Y)

10% X = 5% Y

Y = 2 X

X/(X + Y) = X/(3 X) = 1/3

Hey I have a doubt in this question

What fraction of this year's graduating students at a certain college are males?

(1) Of this year's graduating students, 33% of the males and 20% of the females transferred from another college.

The 1st part says 33% of the males and 20% of females transferred from other college no data about this certain college provided .

(2) Of this year's graduating students, 25% transferred from another college.

As per the 2nd part 25% of graduating were from another college.

True we can use the data from 1 and 2 to calculate the ratio of men to women from another college but
no information is provided about the current college .

As per my understanding we only get ratio of men to women for another college and not this particular college.

Please let me know where I am going wrong

The question is asking for the 'Fraction' of students graduating, we don't have to find the exact answer.

Thats what I think.
