The Sports Medicine Programs of the Olympic Training Center, a complex where final try outs are held for athletes representing the US in the Olympics, is geared toward enhancing athletes' performance and toward their preparation for international competition.
A.) is geared toward enhancing athletes' performance and toward their preparation
B.) is geared to enhance the performance of athletes and to prepare them
C.) are geared to enhance athletes performance and their preparation
D.) are geared toward the enhancement of athletes' performance and toward preparing them
E.) are geared toward enhancing the performance of athletes and preparing them

OA is E.

Can you explain why E is the correct answer & why the rest of the choices are incorrect?

IMO E;

This is the reason

Subject Sport medicine programs- plural, requires a plural verb are and not is.

Choice A and B out.

A.) is geared toward enhancing athletes' performance and toward their preparation - requires are not is
B.) is geared to enhance the performance of athletes and to prepare them - requires are not is
C.) are geared to enhance athletes performance and their preparation- incorrect. to enhance and their performance is no parallel.
D.) are geared toward the enhancement of athletes' performance and toward preparing them - very wordy, .. enhancement and preparing are not parallel
E.) are geared toward enhancing the performance of athletes and preparing them - correct. verb are is correct. enhancing and preparing are parallel

The subject here is programs and so the singular verb - is geared - can not be the verb. A and B are ruled out..

In C , - geared to - is unidiomatic and -athletes performance - lacks the apostrophe.

In D, the expression - . toward the enhancement of athletes' performance and toward preparing them - lacks parelleism.

Hey Kanha,

Unfortunately, most people on here don't underline, so you have to work it out for yourself (using answer choice A). However, in case anyone's reading, please do underlined if you can. The option is just above the text box; select the part you want to underline and click it. Unfortunately, it won't show up as an underline on the screen (it's HTML), but it will show up as an underline for future readers!
