i thought it was E, when I was choosing between C and E, because the it in the second part of the sentence in C seemed to refer to the cobra.

i could be wrong.

Because hissing and broadening are participles .. so feighing should be used as a participle .. in option D feighs is a verb and option feighing is used as a adverb.

in Choice D there is major parallelism error between 'broadening' and 'feigns', so it's not a contender.

I agree with you wonder! I found it very meaningless that people write here their answers without explanation, nobody wonder the others' answers, wants to know whether anybody can explain the questions. Nobody posts questions with the aim of creating a database or providing questions to the members...

Here there are 2 things at test.
1. Parallelism
The hognose snake....+ing , +ing and +ing.... Hissing...broadening.....feigning..... A, B, D can be eliminated.
2. The part starting from 'but' modifies snake and not strikes, so the use of 'it' is necessary to show the dependency. E is out.

The answer seems to be 'E' because in C 'it' could be misinterpreted to be referring to the 'cobra'. There is a definite 'pronoun reference error' in C. Experts please comment!
