Is the answer D (85%-ile?) If not, I think I really need to get a lesson on how to solve this problem.

Well.. My approach was a bit more crude than yours. I wonder where did you end up getting that 72?

This is how I solved it.
(90+81)/2 = 85.5 ~ 85

No you can't do mean of 90 and 81. Amy is 90 percentile so her rank is 90% of 80 i.e. 72. So there are 8 students ahead of her in her own class. Total no. of students ahead of her are 8 plus 18 = 26.
so she is 27th in combined class. rank 100- (27/180)*100
