if you were able to get m and not n, then you didn't understand this question, which only looks abstruse but indeed is the 1st grade exercise.

All you need is to follow the rule of addition in this table, i.e. only the table titles should be added, like x+4=1 and find x, which is x=1-4=-3. Next example, x+e=7 and e=7-x (we know x already), e=7-(-3)=10. Next, x+f=2 and so on ...

We need m and n values. n=y+e, we know e but don't know y, so we need to find y. y+4=-5 and y=-9. Hence n=y+e=-9+10=1.

Find m, z+4=m. Find z to find m, z+e=10, z+10=10, z=0. Again start looking for m, z+4=m and 0+4=m, m=4.

n=1 and m=4, n+m=5.

OK?

Does this question seem representative of what we could see on the GMAT?
I'm really old, but I'll never be too old to become more educated.

when I sat for my auditing qualification exam at Pearson Vue Center last year in March, the spitting image of this question was being administered to one girl sitting there at GMAT comp. I couldn't help remembering that question's format and can report to you now - yes, this is valid GMAT question to puzzle test taker, nothing unusual is there.
