Statements combined:
It's possible that the article is composed of two 5.5 by 8 pages, each with 250 words.
It's possible that the article is composed of three 5.5 by 8 pages, each with 250 words.
Since the number of pages can be different values, the two statements combined are INSUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is E.

Hi All,

We're asked for the number of pages of a certain journal article. Certain DS questions can be answered with a bit of logic and just considering a few possibilities.

1) The size of each page is 5.5 inches by 8 inches.

Fact 1 tells us NOTHING about the number of pages, so there are lots of different possible answers.
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

2) The average (arithmetic mean) number of words per page is 250.

Fact 2 also tells us NOTHING about the number of pages, so there are lots of different possible answers.
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
-The size of each page is 5.5 inches by 8 inches.
-The average (arithmetic mean) number of words per page is 250.

We still don't have enough meaning information to answer the question that is asked, so there are lots of different possible answers.
Combined, INSUFFICIENT

Final Answer: E
