Given: 10 pounds of apples and 2 pounds of grapes cost $12

We have to find out the cost per pound of apples.

Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) The cost per pound of grapes was $2.

=> 2 pounds of grapes cost 2*2 = $4

Since 10 pounds of apples and 2 pounds of grapes cost $12, 10 pounds of apples would cost 12 - 4 = $8; thus, the cost per pound of apples = 8/10 = $0.80. Sufficient.

(2) The cost of 2 pounds of apples was less than the cost of 1 pound of grapes.

Cost of 2 pounds of apples < Cost of 1 pound of grapes

Can't get the unique value. Insufficient.

The correct answer: A

We're told that the cost of 10 pounds of apples and 2 pounds of grapes was $12. We're asked for the cost per pound of apples. We can answer this question with a mix of Algebra and TESTing VALUES.

1) The cost per pound of grapes was $2.

With the given information in the prompt, we can create the following equation (where "A" is the price per pound of apples):
10(A) + 2($2) = $12
10A + $4 = $12
10A = $8
A = $8/10 = $0.80
Fact 1 is SUFFICIENT

2) The cost of 2 pounds of apples was less than the cost of 1 pound of grapes.

With the given information in the prompt - and using "A" as the price per pound of apples and "G" as the price per pound of grapes....
IF...
G = $5 and A = $0.20, then the answer is $0.20
G = $4 and A = $0.40, then the answer is $0.40
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Final Answer: A

Question Stem Analysis:

We need to determine the per-pound cost of apples. If we let a be the per-pound cost of apples and g be the per-pound cost of grapes per pound, we can create the equation:

10a + 2g = 12

We need to determine the value of a. As we can see, if we know the value of g, then we can determine the value of a.

Statement One Alone:

Statement one tells us that the value of g is 2. Since we know the value of g, we can determine the value of a, the per-pound cost of apples. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

Although statement two tells us that the cost of 2 pounds of apples was less than the cost of 1 pound of grapes (i.e., 2a < g), without knowing the value of g, we can’t determine the value of a. Statement two alone is not sufficient.

Answer: A
