In the actual GMAT exam, are the seconds displayed on the clock at all times or only when five minutes are remaining?

A friend said only minutes are displayed, but I am not sure. Having only minutes and no seconds displayed makes it trickier to pace per problem.

im pretty sure they show you the exact time left (minutes and seconds) at all points during the test. if you take a practice test on the gmat preptest software, the actual test layout is almost identical to what you'd find there

Have you confirmed this? There could be variations between the GPrep and actual GMAT exam.

The reason for this confusion is that in both Kaplan Advanced book as well as some online sources say the minutes and seconds are displayed only when five minutes are remaining and not minutes and seconds at ALL points during the exam.

That's right only if you press the "Hide clock" button. If you do this, you won't see the remaining time, but it will automatically pop up 5 minutes before the end and you can't "make it go away". However, note that this is not the default option of the test: time is shown, with minutes and seconds.
