by vishalogy » Fri Jul 10, 2009 3:31 pm
Recent studies have shown that there are now one teacher for every thirty-one students in California's elementary schools, not nearly as many than there were even five years ago.

(A) there are now one teacher for every thirty-one students in California's elementary schools, not nearly as many than there were

(B) there are now one teacher for every thirty-one students in California's elementary schools, not nearly as many there were

(C) there is now one teacher for every thirty-one students in California's elementary schools, not nearly as many than there was

(D) there is now one teacher for every thirty-one students in California's elementary schools, but that ratio is much lower than

(E) there is now one teacher for every thirty-one students in California's elementary schools, not nearly as many as there were

IMO - between D & E.

I'm leaning towards D because "but that ratio..." provides a clear subject of comparison and "much lower than" is correct idiomatically. E sounds correct, but after taking it apart, I am unclear as to what "as many as" is referring to -- students or teachers?

IMO E.

Isn't D (incorrectly) comparing 'ratio' with 'five years'?

IMO E coz the correct idiom is as many as.. in D ratio is being compared with five years.. hence incorrect..
Guys, please lemme know whether there is any case in which "as many" is correct.. such as used in B here..

My vote is for D

I think E is ambiguous in referencing the "not nearly as many as there were" ... does it refer to teachers or students?

IMO E.

In D, the comparison "but the ratio is much lower than even five years ago" does not make sense -- ratio is compared to what here?

ratio is much lower than what it was five years ago would have made sense.

Not very convinced with the following line in the explanation: "The subject for 'there were' later in the sentence is an implied teachers"

At least, I was unable to figure that (the implied meaning) out.
