It should be E. A, B, C eliminated because, they use 'as.....than...' instead of 'as....as'
D compares ratio with '5 years'. That leaves 'E'.

I agree with you. In fact, I also selected E, but that was simply based on the elimination. I couldn't able to figure out what 'were' is referring to before I read the explanation.

Sorry people for a delayed response, haven't been checking the website in the last few days.

The OA is E. I am not sure myself how convincing the explanation provided by Kaplan is.
