GMAT = 680; Wharton Executive MBA Program

by pranika » Tue Mar 03, 2009 9:07 am
Hi Stacy:

I have applied for the Wharton MBA for Executives program. Took the GMAT yesterday and scored 680 (86th Percentile). My scaled scores are - Quantitative = 44 (70th Percentile) and Verbal = 39 (87th Percentile). I am not very happy about the quant scores and think they are not an accurate representation of my quant abilities. But anyways, I was looking for some counsel if I shoudl retake the GMAt and cross the 700+ score barrier?

Just to give you more context about my profile - I have 6 years of manager level experience in commercial strategy/marketing in a top Pharmaceutical company. Have been a top performer at the company and have recieved recommendation letters for the program from 2 VP level executives at my company. In addition, I have a PhD from a big ten university.

Greatly appreciate your help. Thanks

pranika

Dear Pranika,

Based on the information provided, I'm not sure a 20 point increase will make a difference in the decision for the MBA for Executives program. Your 680 is a strong score and you have PhD. Additionally, if you have quantitative work experience (budgets, P&L, analysis), then you demonstrate you have the quantitative ability to succeed in the program. If I were you, I would focus on the rest of the application and ensure it is as strong as possible. A higher score doesn't hurt; I'm just not convinced you need it based on the rest of your profile.

Good luck,
Lisa

Have you interview'ed already? How did it go? Did the GMAT score come up during the interview? I have heard that in EMBA programs, if they really like you as a candidate and your GMAT score is coming in the way of them offering you an admit, they will ask you to take it again.
