Hi,
I gave the GMAT on 4th sept and got a 640(Q-48,V-31).Actually in the test i left one quant question unanswered so,can it be the reason i didnt get a 49? My GMAT prep quant was 49 and Verbal 31.Moreover Q-48 was only 76 percentile.I was quite surprised with this !!Now,i am planning a retake .Please suggest me how to boost my score. My target score is 700.

Thanks :)

Hi stuti123,

First off, a 640/Q48 is a solid performance. Depending on the schools/programs you're interested in, this combo might be enough to apply.

As to your questions:

-Not answering the last question means that the question was scored as incorrect AND was penalized. There are a number of factors that go into the Scale Score algorithm, so it's possible that your last question had no effect on your score.

-A percentile is just a measure of how you compare to other Test Takers. The IMPORTANT number is the Scaled Score. Q48 is a number that most Test Takers will never achieve in their lives; it means that you performed at a really high level against THE TEST. Quant percentiles have been sliding for years, as more and more Test Takers learn about how to properly tackle that section. You shouldn't worry about it.

When do you plan on retesting?

Thank you for the encouraging words.. :) I was quite low in morale with my performance.
Your reply made my day and gave me lot of confidence.
On GMATPrep i had scored a 660(Q-49,V-31) so my score was quite reflective of my prep test.
I am retaking the test oct end.But i have not booked the date yet. Still deciding how many days i will be needing to get the target score of 700. As an indian applicant,i think i will need better score to apply to top 20-30 schools.

What are my chances of improving by oct end.I am on a leave right now so can probably devote a lot of time to my prep.
