A. Between 1990 and 2000 the global economy grew more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture


B. Between 1990 and 2000 the growth of the global economy was more than that during 10,000 years, from when agriculture began
-> Why need comma before "from" this is incorrect. Even first past is not good

C. The growth of the global economy between 1990 and 2000 exceeds that which had been for 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture
->"which" always starts with comma

D. The growth of the global economy between 1990 and 2000 exceeds what it has been for 10,000 years, from when agriculture began
-> Same as B

E. The growth of the global economy between 1990 and 2000 exceeded what it did for the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture



Now compare A and E

A seems to be better

Seems like the usage of "it" is ambiguous in A.

This sentence is testing 3 concepts
Idiom, tenses and pronouns

Do not eliminate the answer for "that which" It is correct in GMAT.
Also, we need to use "had" to mention from XXXX, in the past, to 1950 (a span of 10000 yrs), as we are talking about 1990 - 2000 period.

I am having hard time in differentiating between A and C.
Experts, please help.

In the image, you can see blue box over option A. That indicates that A is the official answer. You should seek explanation for official answer rather than questing against it.

We should follow the rules of official problems as we have to cross the GMAT.

"that which" never be correct in GMAT. "which" used for introducing a non-restricted clause and always starts with comma.

Please see the Ron's explanation for similar problem. Hope it helps.

I think.

The subject in this sentence is a compound one.

"The growth in the global economy"
instead of just

"Global Economy"

That is the reason why I wanted to pick E
