I chose D.

I broke it down into two decisions.

"In which" v "when". I chose "when" because ages talk about a period of time and a more direct referent to a period of time would be when, rather than in which. So I knocked A and B out.

Then, "had existed" or "existed". I chose had existed because it was used in the original sentence. This was important because had existed means that something existed, but it not longer exists today. If you changed it to existed, it changes the meaning simply to existed, but does not say if it exists now or not. Something can exist, cease to exist, and then re-exist. So, using exist instead of had exist would alter the meaning of the passage. So I knocked out C and E and went with D.

Here we need past - past tense construction.


a) in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas
"now currently" = redundant

b) in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas => Correct

c) when great ice sheets existed where there were areas now temperate
=>now should be near to verb and construction is wordy

d) when great ice sheets had existed in current temperate areas

e) when great ice sheets existed in areas now that are temperate
=>now should be near to verb
