Because Gina had laid in bed for several months after her accident, she developed atrophy in her leg muscles.

(A) had laid
(B) lies
(C) is laying
(D) has lay
(E) had lain

IMO: A

Since there are two events, both occur in past and are interdependent. Past Perfect tense is required "had laid"

If it is not A then surely E.

I may have mistaken the past participle of lay. May be "lain" is the correct past participle and not "laid"

The principal parts of lie (to recline) are:

lie (present,) lay (past) and lain (past participle).

The principal parts of lay are:

lay (present), laid (past) and laid (past participle).

As an aid in choosing the correct verb forms, remember that lie means to recline, whereas lay means to place something, to put something on something.

no need of perfect tense as the sequence of events is pretty clear. A,D,E are incorrect.
Between B and C, i prefer B.

I think it should be E, lain is past participle of lie, and we need past perfect tense here.

Past perfect is required not w.r.t accident since lying in bed is anyways afterwards and you use past perfect to tell something happened before another past event.
Past Perfect is requir4ed w.r.t 'developed atrophy'
