Verb tense used here is present perfect and the organism is still living so the past tense EXTENDED is not required .
eliminate C and D .
In E the use of verb IS will make the phrase in to a clause and then the sentence will be a run on sentence since no comma is used before and . So eliminate E .
Between A and B .
I will go with A as it is present continuous tense and keeping in mind that the organism is still living makes more sense .
