Giant Fungus

by Phirozz » Wed Mar 17, 2010 9:52 am
Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tenacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

A) extending
B) extends
C) extended
D) it extended
E) is extending

The sentence checks for parallelism and Tense .

Verb tense used here is present perfect and the organism is still living so the past tense EXTENDED is not required .

eliminate C and D .

In E the use of verb IS will make the phrase in to a clause and then the sentence will be a run on sentence since no comma is used before and . So eliminate E .

Between A and B .

I will go with A as it is present continuous tense and keeping in mind that the organism is still living makes more sense .
"Know thyself" and "Nothing in excess"
