Scientists have recently discovered what could be the
largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant
fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and
rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore
some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than
30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

Ans is a...need explanations

the 2 things that need to be parallel are spawned and extending....first is a ver-eb participle and second is ver-ing partciple....both are parallel according to parallelism rules...every others options gets this parallelism incorrect.

Before extending there is a AND....this indicates clearly that something has to be parallel to it....so spawned is the one parallel to it....because before that

interwoven filigree of mushrooms AND rootlike tentacles are parallel

"by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago" this is prepositional modifier.

One more thing that indicates spawned and extending are parallel is that both describe giant fungus....and not "that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles"

It is a relative clause.

To put it one line, I think the context of this sentence requires that 'verb-ed modifier' be parallel to 'verb-ing modifier'
