geometry - equal area

Hi there,

I woud like your input about this difficult geometry question. Someone can explain to me in simple way the concept. Sorry, I don't know the answer.


If the two regions above have the same area, t is equilateral triangle and s is a square, what is the ratio t : s ?

A) 2 : 3
B) 16 : 3
C) 4 : 3
D) 2 : 43
E) 4 : 43

The diagram for this question is pretty much an equilateral triangle with all of its sides being t and a square with all of its sides being s. We're told that both the figures areas are equal and are asked to find the ratio of t to s.

t^2sqrt(3)/4=s^2

t^2sqrt(3)=4s^2

t^2/s^2=4/sqrt(3)

Take the square root of both sides to find t/s.

t/s=2/(3)^(1/4)

\/3/4t^2 = s^2

t/s =2/\/(\/3)
