Generic drugs- Weaken

Expert replies
by kanha81 » Thu Jun 11, 2009 1:02 pm
The President of EMC Pharm. Co. argued that development costs for new generic drugs ordered by the Center for Disease Control should be subsidized by the Health Dept. because the marketing of such drugs promised to be less profitable than marketing of any other product. In support of his claim, the president argued that sales of generic drugs are likely to be lower since each drug is prescribed to a patient only once. Medicines that combat other illnesses and chronic diseases are prescribed many times to each patient.

Which one of the following, if true, most weakens the support offered by the company president for the claim concerning the marketing of generic drugs?

A) Many of the diseases that generic drugs are designed to prevent can be successfully treated by alternative medicines

B) Pharm. Co. occassinally market products that are neither medicines nor generic drugs

C) Generic drugs are administered to many people than most other Pharm. products

D) Pharm. co. other than the EMC Pharm. Co. produce generic drugs

E) The cost of administering a generic drug is rarely borne by the Pharm. Co. that manufactures that drug.

Please help me understand this question and its reasoning for right answer. Thanks a bunch.

I am not an expert so my amateurish approach to this is something along the following lines:
Based on the para lets assume that the president of the company is in a meeting with the health department folks. This president is really excited about his generic drug that CDC wants to buy. However he thinks that his drug takes a lot of money to manufacture. He also knows that he is not going to make any profit out of this because this is a one time drug only and people are not going to do it again once they have already done it compared to other drugs where people get multiple prescription. So that is why he want sthe health dept to spot his manufacturing costs because on one hand he is helping the CDC with a good drug and on the other hand he is suffering a loss because of this. So what can weaken this president's point? Obviously the strongest opponent to the president will be someone from the health department right? So lets think like a big shot from health department who is supposed to make a decision

A Whats so big deal about your drugs? There are other drugs which can successfully treat so many diseases that your drug claims to treat.
B Least relevant to offer subsidy to you
C Yeah many people get your drugs but again one time only so this does not weaken your point.
D Okay there is this other company that is producing generic drugs, but I don't know whats their deal yet. I also don't know whose is better: yours or his.
E So I can give you subsidy but what about the cost of administering the drug? You want us to spot it?

So IMHO A, C and E stand some ground
None of these are foolproof weakening choices but we have to pick the strongest ones. Since its the issue of budget here I might go with E. But A is still making me uncomfortable. So E is it. A has a problem because maybe the other alternative drugs are so damn expensive in the market!!
200 or 800. It don't matter no more.

This is very very tough one.

IMO C is correct answer.

Questions stem asks us to weaken the support of the claim i.e sales of generic drug likely to be lower since it is prescibed only once.

However, if the no of times it is administered exceeds the other pharma products then the sales of generic drugs would grow.

Hence C

IMO C)

Medicines that combat other illnesses and chronic diseases are prescribed many times to each patient.

Each generic drug is prescribed to a patient only once.

What would weaken this?

If other medicines are used by 10 people 10 times then total use is 100 times.

If generic medicines are used by 1000 people once then total use is 1000 times.

C) explains this point perfectly.

IMO, the answer is C. Here's why:

A: This actually strengthens the argument; if other medicines can treat diseases well, then people may go for the other medicines, decreasing the sales even more, thus supporting the company president's point.

B: Irrelevant; so what? This has nothing to do with the generic drugs themselves.

C: This is perfect; if generic drugs are given to people more than other drugs, there is a high demand for them. If there is a high demand, then profits are higher, reducing the need for a subsidy.

D: We are not concerned with other companies; this is tempting (social proof), but this is a trick.

E: This is even more supportive of the president's argument than that of choice A; if the price isn't set by the pharmaceutical company, then profits are even lower, and subsidies are even more necessary.

IMO - C.

If generic drug is given more to the poeple than other products, means that generic drugs are in high demand.

Thought Process

by turbo jet » Fri Jun 12, 2009 2:56 am
IMO:C (Edited the explanation below that contained few errors at the end: Lost track midway....)

Schumi's explanation is correct!!!!

My thought process:

I read the argument only

I paraphrased the argument in my own word

What do I want to weaken: Marketing will lead to less profit

My aim: To find out how marketing will not lead to reduced profit?

What impacts profit: Reduce Cost or Increase Revenue by increasing sale

But the argument says that if sales reduce , only then my marketing profit will reduce.

So I eliminate what impacts my profit to one and that is Increase Revenue by increasing sale

I now start reading the answer choice and look for anything that hints at increasing sales

And BOOM!!!! I find that in Choice C

However E too was very close. I negated it because it it was not negating an assumption given in the argument whereas C does.

Cheers!!!

I would go for C

I think schumi_gmat got it totally right when he/she said ' Questions stem asks us to weaken the support of the claim' .. I did not pay attention word 'support' at first in the question.

C is the best to weaken the support provided in the argument.

C is the most suitable option in this case
