Absolutely correct. Even I was stuck with options A and D.
I eliminated option D since it didn't have the "HE" at the end.

The sentence structure in D is not correct.

Even though + IC + COMMA + IC.

Even though he was ill, he came to the meeting.

The structure is awkward to me.

I cannot explain it. Experts can explain. We can wait about comments from experts.

Nor is the use of even though appropriate here, as there is no seeming logical inconsistency between the two clauses.
