by mmorganbc04 » Sat Jun 07, 2008 11:19 am
Working my way through the Math Content Review of Kaplan Premier 2009, and am totally getting peeved at some of the explanations that say, " use your calculator to determine the value of.." WHAT CALCULATOR?!?!?!!?!!? sorry needed to vent.

Are you sure that you bought the GMAT book and not the SAT book? On the SAT, test takers are allowed to use a calculator.

If it is the GMAT book, please let me know the version number and the pages that say to use a calculator and I'll check it out.

It's incredibly frustrating to see how many typos I've found in the Kaplan GMAT Premier 2009 book - in both the practice sets and the answers to them. It seems like I find one every few pages!! Does anyone proofread this stuff for pete's sake?!

True!

I guess the calculator part came off from their SAT materials.

On a different note, I personally think Kaplan does have some real good quality GMAT questions though.

It balances out ; may be...

The typographical errors in the math section were lamentably caused by problems at the printer during the first printing. They were corrected in reprints, so they no longer appear in subsequent printings of the book.

In addition, a PDF of the entire revised chapter 8 is available online at www.kaptest.com/publishing for customers who bought the first printing. Please click on the "GMAT 2009: Premier Program" link under the "Business School" heading.

Our customers' satisfaction with our products is important to us, and I am very sorry for any inconvenience the printer problems have caused.

Also, calculators were mentioned in the math content review section because it's only there to refresh math basics. It doesn't provide tips and strategies for solving problems during the actual exam. However, it was understandably confusing/frustrating to read about calculators in this context. Therefore, all mention of calculators was also removed (and answer explanations revised) in the second printing.

When you are ready to study the specific GMAT math question types and Kaplan's time-saving test strategies like backsolving and picking numbers, please follow the advice and strategies found in chapters 9, 10, and 11, and practice them using the test-like questions at the end of each chapter.

I apologize again for any inconvenience this may have caused, and wish everyone the best of luck on the exam.

Sincerely,

Monica P. Lugo

Well, a sentence correction question on the verbal frustrated me when the obvious error was that it misspelled "military" -- except it misspelled "military" in every single answer choice as well. I guess I was supposed to correct the other error.
