From Franklin to Maple Valley

If the city of Franklin lies along a certain route between the cities of Maple Valley and Viewcrest, what is the distance along the route from Franklin to Maple Valley?

1. Traveling from Viewcrest to Maple Valley at an average rate of 45 m.p.h. takes 20 minutes longer than at an average rate of 50 m.p.h.

2. Traveling along the route at a constant 25 miles per gallon of gas, a car will use twice as much gas between Maple Valley and Franklin as it will use between Franklin and Viewcrest.

1. is insufficient because we do not know anything about the position of Franklin, we can only find out the distance between Maple Valley and Viewcrest.
2. is insufficient because it only tells us what the ratio between the distances Maple Valley - Franklin and Franklin - Viewcrest is.

Now, using both stmts together will help solve the mystery, since you know the ratio of the two distances from stmt 2 and you also know the sum of the two distances from stmt 1. I strongly suggest you stop here, since knowing the exact answer is not going to help. We've already established that only the two stmts combined provide the answer, so go with C.

The correct response is (C). Statement (1) alone establishes that the distance between Viewcrest to Maple Valley. How? Substitute the information in statement (1) into the �rate� formula: (rate)  (time) = distance Given a constant distance d between the two cities, let t equal the time at 50 m.p.h., and let (t + hour) equal the time at 45 m.p.h.: At 50 m.p.h.: (50)(t) = d At 45 m.p.h.: (45)(t + ) = d Since d is constant, you can now solve for t and determine the distance between Viewcrest to Maple Valley. Although you don�t need to do the math for this Data Sufficiency question, here are the calculations:

At 50 m.p.h., it takes 3 hours to travel from Viewcrest to Maple Valley. Accordingly, the distance between these two cities is 150 miles. However, statement (1) provides no information to allow you to determine where Franklin is located along the route, and is therefore insufficient alone to answer the question. Statement (2) alone establishes that Franklin is located two-thirds of the distance along the route from Maple Valley to Viewcrest. However, statement (2) alone provides no information about actual distance between any two of the three cities, and is therefore insufficient alone to answer the question. Considering statements (1) and (2) together, you can answer the question, and� is the correct response. Just for the record, the answer to the question is 100. (Franklin is located two thirds of the way, or 100 miles, along the 150 mile route from Maple Valley to Viewcrest.)
