I go with B.

3 out of 7 people will file a tax return seems correct since a ratio is defined.

My answer is A. Three out of seven people will tax returns (not a tax return).

I think we really need an expert to chime in here. Does your OA give an explanation?

I initially thought it was (A), but after closer examination, it appears that (B) may be the better choice.

For example:
(1)One out of two people eat an apple with lunch.
OR
(2)One out of two people eat apples with lunch.

(1) states that 1 out of two people eat EXACTLY 1 apple with lunch.
(2) states that 1 out of two people eat 1 OR MORE apples after lunch. It is ambiguous.

Since we know that we turn in ONE tax return every year, it must be the case that (B) is the better answer choice...

Or do we file 2? One for the state and one for the federal gov't? I don't know. I have an accountant do this for me

The explanation is as follows -

A. tax returns with a disk found in software stores and accounting texts
B. a tax return with a disk found in software stores and accounting texts

A means that 3 people will file mulitple tax returns with one disk which is not possible.

B means that 3 people will file a tax return with a disk

What is grammatically wrong with A? Are you chosing a more practical answer? How does it make a difference if we file 1 tax return or multiple?
