If you're anything like me you're somewhat skeptical of anything that's free...

That said I'd be interested in hearing from people about what they think of the free practice tests offered by many of the GMAT prep companies.

I recently took the Veritas free online diagnostic and scored much better than on any self-administered diagnostic I've taken to date.

While that diagnostic seemed easier than I thought it would be, if anything, test prep companies have an incentive to make their free diagnostics more difficult. If I had done poorly on the free test I might have actually signed up then and there for a class...

Bottomline: what are people's thoughts on the free tests offered by companies such as Kaplan and Veritas? Is the difficulty similar to what we'll find on the real GMAT?

I certainly understand your concerns with free--they say you get what you pay for, right? I haven't reviewed the free tests you've taken myself yet, but I've heard good things about the free diagnostics from the major test prep companies. The important thing though is to focus on larger brand-name company material--I would be very skeptical of a free diagnostic from a no-name company.

One more point--the absolute best GMAT practice tests available on the market today are the GMATPrep tests from MBA.com. Those are completely free. :)

Love to hear other people's thoughts.

I'm a big fan of Manhattan GMAT's practice tests. The tip is if you buy a book from MGMAT (their SC book being highly recommended) you can unlock their 6 practice tests for free. I felt they were a bit tougher than other tests, which actually boosted my confidence. Once you finish their 6 test you can also reset them and take them again although 30% of the test questions might be repeats, they are still worth the practice.

But ofcourse like Eric mentioned the absolute best ones are from GMAC (GMATPrep test) and yes they are free!
