Too old to bear arms himself, Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass served as a recruiting agent, traveled through the North to exhort Black men to join the Union army.
(A) traveled through the North to exhort
(B) and he traveled through the North and exhorted
(C) and traveling through the North exhorted
(D) traveling through the North and exhorted
(E) traveling through the North and exhorting

Why A is wrong?
E
doesn't E conveys that while traveling through the North America he served as agent.
But the intent is that after he became agent he travelled across america.
In A it is not clear what is subject of "traveled" you need conjunction before "traveled".

In E , participle phrases " traveling through north " and " exhorting Black.." clearly modifying "Frederick Douglass served as a recruiting agent"

Frederick Douglass served as a recruiting agent is the main clause.

traveled through the North to exhort Black men to join the Union army. The subject is not clear like travelled who?? Its needs to be a phrase modifying the main clause.

travelling through the north and exhorting ....

Thanks

So traveled is not modifying Frederick Douglass in A?
