Guys , my answer is C ,

By ear i felt had is unnecessary....simple past would do ...

the thing is sentence has and which makes the sentences indepenet and both happened in past.....we are not concerned with which occured first....and hence we do not need the had in sentence...

if sentence was Louis ruled for over 72 years since he had inherited his throne at age of four.....(not an ideal sentence but without and)

hope this explains..

C is the answer because it is parallel

inherited the throne at the age of four and ruled the country for 72 years.

Also, past perfect is only required if you have two actions in the past and it is not clear which one happened first and which happened later. In this case that is not the case.
