Fraction of Buckets capacity

Expert replies
by ferpape » Tue Sep 08, 2009 10:12 am
Buckets A and B contained only solvent and bucket B was 1/2 full. If all the solvent in bucket A was then poured into bucket B, what fraction of the capacity of B was then filled with solvent?
(1)Before the solvent from A was poured, A was 1/3 filled
(2) A and B have the same capacity

The correct answer is C.... But I want to know why St.1 is not Sufficient if it was said that all the solvent of A was poured and they are fiving us A was 1/3 filled....???

Thanks

Eg.

Bucket B can hold 4 cu. litres of liquid
If it's half full then it has 2 cu. litres of liquid

You know A is 1/3rd full. Depending on what A's capacity is, it have a diff value... if its capacity is 3 litres, it has 1 litre. If it's 6 litres, it has 2 litres etc.

So 1 is insufficient on its own.

If both A and B are of the same volume, then you know that 1/3rd of A = 1/3rd of B. So you can calculate a fraction. Otherwise you cannot.
