After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine is being tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit.

A. tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help
B. tested that could eventually have the capability of propelling aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or to help
C. tested, eventually able to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours, or helping
D. tested, and it eventually could propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or helping
E. tested, and it could eventually have the capability to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

OA to follow after some discussion. Please discuss each answer choice.

Analyzing the sentence given, one can see that the elements that have to be parallel are propel and help.
B,C,D can be eliminated because of incorrect form of parallelism.
Between A and E, I prefer A (propel or help). E seems to be too wordy.

A. tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help
B. tested that could eventually have the capability of propelling aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or to help : NOT PARALLEL
C. tested, eventually able to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours, or helping : to or 'ing form NOT PARALLEL
D. tested, and it eventually could propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or helping : propel or 'ing form NOT PARALLEL
E. tested, and it could eventually have the capability to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

E uses the incorrect idiom: capability to propel
The correct idiom is: capability of propelling.
Hence E can't be the answer. There is nothing wrong with A.

Mate, the OA is E only.

The way I see what might be wrong in option A

"That" is the key to the first option. This essential modifier is placed just after "tested" and this is what makes it doubtful.

However, capability to propel is not wrong ! It just says the engine has the capability to propel.

This option cannot be ruled out based on the idiom usage.

I am still not sure though.

Any experts opinion on this one ?

the right answer is "A" not "E"
"could eventually have the capability to propel" using "Could" with "capability to propel" is redundant.

But as far as i know this question is from "1000 series" the book is famous as "1000 SC". the question number is 952 and the official answer is A...:)

Sana, 1000 SC series is a very misleading question bank with many of the answers wrong :) I suggest that you stay away from it.

This is a retired GMAT question and I have the correct OA.

Lets see what experts have to say on this.

i know its a misleading series...:P thanks by the way..
here is a logic..could means one is capable of doing something and capability means the same..so in E the usage of both the term is redundant. however, i am also waiting for an expert comment.
