For all integers n, the function f is defined by f (n) = an, where a is a constant. What is the value of f (1)?
(1) f (2) = 100
(2) f (3) = -1,000

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.


i think answer is D

Something is seriously wrong with this question. From (A) and (B) the constant you get do not match which is not what you should expect on GMAT.

BTW given the info the ans should be D.

i think answer is D
so i'm going to ASSUME that this problem is supposed to say a^n, not an, so that we can avoid the problem pointed out by the previous poster.

if that is the case:
the prompt question can be rephrased to, 'what is a?'

(1)
this means that a squared is 100.
that's insufficient, though, because there are two such a's: namely, 10 and -10.

(2) this means that a cubed is -1000.
this has only one real solution: a = -10.
this is sufficient.

answer = b
