Craig, Mark and Sue complete a certain piece of work in 10,20 and 5 hours respectively. Craig works alone for the first 2 hours. Mark and Sue then join Craig and the three complete the work together. How long did it take to complete the task ?

A - 3hrs

B - 3 4/7hrs

C - 4 hrs

D - 4 2/7 hrs

E - 4 5/7 hrs

Let the job = 20 units.
Rate for Craig = w/t = 20/10 = 2 units per hour.
Rate for Mark = w/t = 20/20 = 1 unit per hour.
Rate for Sue = w/t = 20/5 = 4 units per hour.
Work produced by Craig in 2 hours = r*t = 2*2 = 4 units.
Remaining work = 20-4 = 16 units.
Combined rate for C+M+S = 2+1+4 = 7 units per hour.
Time to finish the job = w/r = 16/7 hours.
Total time = 2 + 16/7 = 30/7 hours.

The correct answer is D.

Craig can complete a work in 10 hours, So in 1 hour he can complete 1/10 th of the work.
Mark can complete a work in 20 hours, So in 1 hour he can complete 1/20 th of the work.
Sue can complete a work in 5 hours, So in 1 hour he can complete 1/5 th of the work.

Work completed in the first two hours = 2 * 1/10 = 2/10 = 4/20 - (1)
Mark and Sue then join Craig and say they completed the remaining work in h hours

Then

Work done during the first 2 hours + work done in the next H hours = 1 (1 unit of work)

4/20 + h*((1/10)+(1/20)+(1/5)) = 1, Implies
4/20 + h*((2/20)+(1/20)+(4/20)) = 1, Implies
4/10 + h*(7/20) = 1, Implies
h*(7/20) = 16/20
h = 16/7 = 2 2/7 hours

Total time taken to complete the tast is 2 + 2 2/7 = 4 2/7

Option D IMO

their respective speeds are 1/10, 1/20 and 1/5 considering 1 as whole (or one work) and t (time required to complete work), 1/t
they will show average speed soon after Craig starts the job first and continues 2 h.: (1/10)*2
they will complete one job: (1/10)*2 + (1/10 + 1/20 + 1/5)*t=1
solve for t: 1/5+ t(2+1+4)/20=1, 4+7t=20, t=16/7 or Total time 16/7 h. Plus 2 h.= 4 2/7 h
