Hi All,

We're told that 5 friends play blackjack in Las Vegas and lose an AVERAGE of $100 each - with the losses of two of the friends totaling $380. We're asked for the AVERAGE loss of the other 3 friends. This question is a standard Average Formula question and requires just a bit or Arithmetic to solve.

To start, if 5 friends had an AVERAGE loss of $100 each, then the TOTAL loss was (Total)/5 = $100 --> Total = $500

The losses from 2 of the friends totaled $380, so the remaining loss would be $500 - $380 = $120.

That loss, when averaged over the remaining 3 friends, is... $120/3 = $40 each

Final Answer: A

The total loss of all the friends is 500 dollars. Since two friends lost 380 dollars, the remaining 3 friends lost a total of 120 dollars, or an average of 120/3 = 40 dollars.
