Hi guys,

My first attempt at the GMAT using their software was a 550. That's a horrible score but that's without any prep, reading any materials or knowing what the test entailed. I actually finished with time to spare so I definitely have room to improve.

I'll be self studying due to the nature of my current job, and I'm starting with the Manhattan course with the:

1) Foundations of GMAT Math
2) Foundations of GMAT verbal

Followed by the Manhattan course books. I'm aiming to take the test in the early spring of 2014, does that give me enough time to apply for schools for the fall semester of 2014? Am I starting too easy? Are there any recommended self study posts to follow?
My GMAT philosophy will for now be: "Measure twice, cut one"

Hi teamaaron2,

First off, 550 isn't a horrible score - these days, it's about the 50th percentile. You also mentioned that you didn't prep, so scoring "in the middle" shouldn't be too much of a surprise. The good news is that you've given yourself plenty of time to prepare, so you can certainly improve.

Study plans will vary from person to person, but you have a decent idea as to where to start (and you can add resources as you continue to work).

As to your timeline, I'd suggest that you define where you might want to go to school and do some research on those school's applications (and deadlines). As an example, most US Business Schools have a Round 1 admissions deadline in October (with school starting the following Fall), but there are usually 3 Rounds (and sometimes more). This means that you have to plan for EVERYTHING, including the GMAT, and have it all done before you apply.
