14. A total of $20,000 was invested in two certificates of deposit at simple annual interest rates of 6 percent and 8 percent, respectively. If the total interest on the two certificates was $1,440 at the end of one year, what fractional part of the $20.000 was invested at the higher rate?

Equation from the given conditions
5x+ 25x + 2x(10) + y = 265

that is 50x + y = 265

Rule : "When you are asked to minimize a quantity,you must maximize all others and vice-versa"

that the max value of X can be 5 .

thus its
50*5 + y= 265
hence y = 15

Solution to first question -

let x = $ amount invested at the higher rate

0.08x + 0.06(20,000 - x) = 1440

0.08x + 1200 - 0.06x = 1440

0.02x = 240

x = 12,000

12,000 / 20,000 = 3/5
