D and E are correct .
I will choose E , since D is passive .

In the first phrase, the sentence has "them" - plural and the author is talking about it.

Hence, rule out B.

In A, B, D - the sentence has "in by" . I believe this is wrong.

In C, no clear reference to "they". E seems to be the right answer
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group

The major problem with C is:

C)because this great modernist provides fascinating evidence about the creative processes they were engaged in -->Here this can't point to 40 poems, which is the intended meaning of the sentence.
