Test an analogous case with easier values:
2⁴ - 2³ - 2² - = 16 - 8 - 4 - 2 =
The matching blue portions imply the following:
2²⁰ - 2¹⁹ - 2¹⁸ - 2¹⁷ = 2¹⁷

The correct answer is C.
