Despite the legal arguments of Robert and I, the zoning board approved the new housing project before it adjourned.

A) Robert and I, the zoning board approved

B) Robert and I, the zoning board had approved

C) Robert and me, the zoning board approved

D) Robert and me, the zoning board had approved

E) Robert and me the zoning board approved

In the statement what does 'it' refer to.Isn't it ambiguous to have the 'it' since it might refer to the new housing project or the zoning board.Because of the presence of 'it',even 'C' is possible.Please suggest

IMO D

there are two actions taking place on in past perfect the zoning board had approved so other action in past simple before it adjourned

it refers to the zoning board.
its just like the court is adjourned so it the judgement body.

what is oa?

I chose B on those grounds.

Try reading the sentence without "Robert" in it.

Which option makes more sense?

why do we need "had" (past perfect ) here? we have 'before' in the sentence .

Though we have the indicative word 'before' we need the 'had' to explicitly mention the time frame of actions.

Where is this question from? No source cited.

I've never seen an official question that would test pronouns in quite this way (AB vs CDE). It's clunky. I've never seen two official answer choices differ only by a comma (C and E). Also, you CAN use past perfect here but you don't HAVE to (because of the "before"). Both are okay, ultimately, so this one has two right answers.

Basically, I wouldn't study this one.
