Miguel is baking a cake.the cake mix recipes calls for 5/8 of the total weight to be milk, 1/4 to be butter, and the remainder to be even mixture of nuts and spices. If Miguel accidentally doubles the butter and forgets the mixture of nuts and spices altogether., what proportion of the botched cake mix would be milk?

Let us assume that total weight of cake = W
Then, Milk to be used = 5W/8
Butter to be used = W/4
Remaining wt. of nuts and spices = W - (5W/8 + W/4) = W/8
Now Miguel accidentally doubles the butter means butter he used = 2W/4 = W/2, instead of W/4.
Since he forgets nuts and spices, so milk used = W - W/2 = W/2, which is one-half of the botched cake mix.

The correct answer is B.

1/4 of the cake is butter.
Since he doubles it 2*(1/4) is 1/2 of the cake becomes butter.

Since now he forgets the nuts and spices mix, the remaining portion for milk required would be half.

Ans. B ??

Let recipe = 16.
Milk = (5/8)*16 = 10.
Butter = (1/4)*16 = 4.
Nuts and Spices = 16-10-4 = 2.
Butter doubled = 2*4 = 8.
New total without nuts and spices = milk + butter = 10+8 = 18.
Milk/Total = 10/18 = 5/9.

The correct answer is C

now I am confused which is right answer..
I guess thr right answer is 5/9
but can u please help
me Mitch why 1/2 is incorrect..
if we take no is 24 then we get 1/2..

Mitch is right.

You can re-do his work with 24 as the total weight:
Let recipe = 24.
Milk = (5/8)*24 = 15.
Butter = (1/4)*24 = 6.
Nuts and Spices = 24-15-6 = 3.
Butter doubled = 2*6 = 12.
New total without nuts and spices = milk + butter = 15+12 = 27.
Milk/Total = 15/27 = 5/9.
