Can somebody shed some light on the quality of the ETS tests (the old official software). How do scores on those tests compare to the current standards?

Good practice questions, but really bad indicator of your actual GMAT scores. These old tests are paper tests and not computer adaptive as the GMAT is today. You're better off using the GMATPrep software.

I was referring to the old ETS software (which is computer adaptive) which is now the GMAT Prep.

Ah, you must be referring to PowerPrep. From what I understand, the scoring algorithm is the exact same as it is in GMATPrep today. I'd say that it is a good source of practice, but the interface is outdated.

I'd say it's still worth doing them for the practice, but the questions are a little old and might be a bit too easy. People say you can reinstall GMATPrep and get mostly new questions, so if you take a break from those tests for a while and do other tests, you might not remember the questions. In the meantime, keep doing practice questions. You can also do the PR tests; they're adaptive and pretty close to the real thing.

FYI the algorithm from PowerPrep is NOT the same as GMATPrep. PowerPrep was using a truncated version of the official GMAT algorithm. GMATPrep now uses the same algorithm as the official test.
