While some academicians believe that business ethics should be integrated into every business course, others say that students will take ethics seriously only if it is taught as a separate, required course

what does 'it' refer to. 'ETHICS' is plural

Hi Vikram:

Ethics can either be singular or plural depending on context. In the aforementioned sentence, ethics is singular and hence "it" refers to "business ethics".

Singular usage of ethics: As a humanities branch of study.

For example: Physics, Mathematics, and Psychosis are all singular. Ethics is no different.
Ethics is a required course for all professions.

Plural usage: as the behavior of something/someone.

His ethics are questionable.
Do you think his ethics are justified?

Let me know if this helps :)
