To answer your question--the essays are scored separately from your quant and verbal.

Your essays are scored from 0.0 - 6.0. 6.0 is the highest score you can receive.

Just to add to that...they're scored in .5-point increments. 6.0, 5.5, 5.0 and downward. Aim for 4.0 to be sure the adcoms don't ask you to retake, but anything 4.5 or better is best.
