shade 1 is equal proportion, so just find the difference in material to see how many shade 2s we need to make.

540-400 = 140

since every time we make a shade 2, we shirnk that difference in material by 4 --(because 6-2 = 4)--, we need to mix 140/4 batchs of shade 2 = y = 140/4 = 35 = choice B

I still don't get it, I think I don't understand the question. Could you explain all the steps you do until arrive the solution.

Best approach is to plug in numbers:


Start with 50
for sample 1 - 300 + 100
you are left with A = 140 and B = 300 A != B

now try 35
for sample 2 - 210 + 70
you are left with A = 330 and B = 330 A = B
