Eliot

by vscid » Sun Jan 25, 2009 7:06 pm
Although the author himself declared them unpublishable, the first appearance in print of 40 poems by T. S. Eliot is a significant event, since they provide fascinating evidence about the creative processes that were engaged in by this great Modernist .

a. since they provide fascinating evidence about the creative processes that were engaged in by this great Modernist
b. since it provides fascinating evidence about the creative processes that were engaged in by this great Modernist
c. because this great Modernist provides fascinating evidence about the creative processes they engaged in.
d. because they provide fascinating evidence about the creative processes that were engaged in by this great Modernist
e. since they provide fascinating evidence about the creative processes in which this great Modernist engaged
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

Is the answer B

'Since it provides' is the only answer choice referring back correctly to the appearence.

Is this E, because the passive voice doesnt appear correct here

"that were engaged in by this great Modernist " ???

I dont think the modifier could make much sense if they are referring to the appearance. It should refer to the poems.

IMO E

As appearance doesnot provide any fasicnating evidence , poem does.

moreover, A,B,D are passive sentences - OUT

C - they is incorrect

"..is a significant event" so we need a "it" and not "they"
B is the only option with "it"

The 'event' of appearence of the poems for the first time is a fascinating evidence, and not the poems itself. By that logic, it refers to the total phrase appearence......

Can someone post the OA

I am going with A. We are clearly talking about poems and thus i think B is out. Was torn between A and E but i like A better as it seems elegant.

IMO D.

facinating evidence about the creative proccess that were engaged in by the modernits
the above phrase cleary refers to the poems.

Ans B
it - provides - can not be as it (Poems) plural

Ans D
they (pronoun) - provide (verb) - correct
Morever, the sentence starts with contrast (Although) and "because of" cleary provide the reason for the first part of the sentence (Althogugh....unpublishble)

So, D is the correct answer.

ANS E
in which the moderninst engaded is not the correct usage.
