DS Section 5 problem 14.

by StarDust845 » Mon Dec 17, 2007 12:03 pm
14.

3.2xy6

If x and y each represent single digits in the decimal above, what digit does x represent?

(1) When the decimal is rounded to the nearest tenth, 3.2 is the result.
(2) When the decimal is rounded to the nearest hundredth, 3.24 is the result

Obviously I can't get the answer from (1) alone.

From (2):
The number has to be 3.23y6 right? for y GE 4 (GE means Greater than or Equal to - Somehow the post gets mangled up if I use inequality symbol).

So we know the value of x is 3. So answer should be B. But it isn't.

Calista.

Well, on second thoughts y need not be greater than 4. It could be 0 also still x must be 3.

I'm not sure either is sufficient. Unless I'm missing something, couldn't it be 3.2396 or 3.2416?

Calista, first option is not sufficient at all. Now by second option, we can not be sure that the hundredth digit be 4. It can be 3 as well. I mean the number can be 3.2399 or 3.2411. So the answer should be E.
Correct me If I am wrong

Agree with Camitava, ans should be E

3.2xy6

If x and y each represent single digits in the decimal above, what digit does x represent?

(1) When the decimal is rounded to the nearest tenth, 3.2 is the result.

decimal can be 3.15 -- 3.24 INSUFF

(2) When the decimal is rounded to the nearest hundredth, 3.24 is the result

decimal can be 3.235 -- 3.244 INSUFF

combine we have

decimal still can be 3.235 --- 3.244

coz each one will get rounded to 3.24 which can be rounded to 3.2 (tenth place)

INSUFF E
